Wagner’s Music in Ireland is a two-part documentary exploring the relationship of Irish audiences, authors, critics and composers with the music of Wagner over the past 150 years.
In 2013, the bi-centenary year of Richard Wagner’s birth, Dr Michael Murphy investigates the peformance history of Wagner’s music in Ireland from the 1860s to today. Featuring contributions from many musicologists and musicians, the programmes explore Wagner’s art and how it influenced Irish composers and authors such Stanford and Harty, Joyce and Yeats.
The programmes are presented by Dr Michael Murphy who lectures in the Department of Music, Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick.
The contributors are: Christopher Morris, Harry White, Aine Sheil, Fergus Sheil, Jennifer O’Connor-Madsen, Jeremy Dibble, Ita Beausang, Axel Klein, Ian Fox, Gavan Ring and Mark Fitzgerald. The reader is Lorcan Cranitch.

The first programme investigates how Wagner’s music became increasingly popular with Irish audiences from the 1860s up to the early 1900s.
Programme 2 – TX Friday 4 October 2013, 7 pm, RTÉ lyric fm
The second programme explores the performance of Wagner’s music in Ireland from the early 1900s up to 2013 and his influence on Irish composers and authors.
