The life and work of the writer Rosa Mulholland (1841-1921), poet, novelist and writer of spine-chilling ghost stories. Presented by Sara Lodge.
FORTHCOMING: RTÉ lyric fm, autumn 2025.
Sara Lodge, lecturer in English at the University of St Andrews, presents a programme on the life and work of Rosa Mulholland.
Mulholland, from a well-off Catholic background in Northern Ireland, studied art in London before deciding to concentrate on her writing. Her work was published in Britain by Dickens in his journal All the Year Round, and in Ireland by Fr Matthew Russell in the Irish Monthly. Her novels and stories tackled themes like landlordism, Irish nationalism, and the position of women in society, and she published over 30 books. Much of her work is set in the west of Ireland, where she spent some of her teenage years.
